Kim Mac

Painting of a pale, crying figure between two blue windows and flowering branches.
The View Is Beautiful, 2023. Acrylic on canvas, 75 × 120 cm (29 1/2 × 47 1/4 in).

Alchemical anarchism. Mind the gap.

Manifesto

Kim Mac doesn't paint pictures. She files evidence.

Saints with dotted faces, a wolf in the wrong century, a golden vessel humming in the middle of the room: icons for a religion nobody has invented yet, and nobody will fund.

Symbols are tools here, not decoration. Lift them, break them, put them back wrong. Marx on kraft paper hangs next to a moon with a grudge. Permission from the canon, the algorithm and the white cube was never requested.

Look slowly. Take what you understand. Argue with the rest.

About

Bio

Kim Mac is a multidisciplinary artist, writer and performer based in Soho, London. She works in ink on paper and acrylic on canvas, and across film, performance and text. Her drawings and paintings draw on alchemy, Celtic mythology, Jungian psychology and esoteric philosophy, and on her own passage through addiction and recovery. The New Rebellion and Alchemical Anarchism are her ongoing frameworks for that work.

Approach

Two bodies of work share one grammar. The ink drawings, A4 to A2, are dense and frontal: hatching, stippled borders and looping threads tie figures to hearts, moons, eyes and anatomical fragments, and text is written into the image as motto, caption or diary line.

The acrylics carry the same vocabulary into flat, saturated colour: haloed nudes outlined in black and blue, rows of dots used as frames, chequered floors, open doors and windows. The format is often the tall, narrow panel of the icon or the tarot card. Devotional formats, secular and autobiographical subjects.
